So being over 35, my OBGYN suggest running blood tests. It turned out my FSH was elevated to a 19; when it is this high, you are in menopause; FSH is the hormone that communicates with the ovaries. To my doctors’ credit, she also said she had a personal friend who had the same issue and did Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with success. Most fertility clinics will harvest eggs for invetrofertilization as long as one’s egg count is 1.0 or higher, although I did find one place that would harvest with a count as low as 0.8. Well, my count was 0.2…essentially, I had no eggs. I then heard about acupuncture and was referred to Marc Cutler by my GYN. I was given a very detailed medical questionnaire to complete – much more thorough than I had ever received from at any doctor. As I told my friends, it was like switch had been flipped in my brain. I simply did not want to smoke as much, and resisting smoking in “trouble” situations has become much easier as well. Although I came from a background where stress and high performance were typical, the mechanisms I used to balance my workload and my health were faulty, to say the least. Sometimes I wonder how it came to be that I found myself in Marc’s office. It wasn’t solely the stress of my work, and I certainly had no desire to become one with my “chi” Instead, it was a series of events that made me wake up one morning and say – ENOUGH! About six months ago, I went to my doctor complaining about abdominal pain. Several tests and referrals later, I found myself on the bed of a CAT scan machine thinking that I was a few minutes away from an appendectomy. The surgeon had the results in his hands, and approached my husband and I in the waiting area-among 15 other patients. With austere precision he said, “Mrs. Rademann, you don’t have appendicitis… You do, however, have a large ovarian cyst that you should get looked at immediately.” Embarrassed knowing that my medical drama was now shared with strangers, my husband and I left to figure out what to do next. My OB prescribed medication to shrink the cyst, and although two months of therapy proved to help, I was stuck taking a medication that made me extremely dizzy and nauseated all the time. The cyst wasn’t my only concern, however. I wasn’t healthy. I wasn’t going to the gym, eating as I should, or worrying about my cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. Don’t get me wrong – I cared about these things but I suppose what made me not want to know, was what I was going to have to change in my life to make things different. I woke up one morning annoyed that I would have to take the medication that gave me all sorts of side effects, with only one positive, temporary solution – the cyst was shrinking. I was disappointed that the plans my husband and I had to start our family were significantly delayed. Most importantly, however, I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I came to Marc out of sheer desperation, hoping that just maybe acupuncture could alleviate my lifelong insomnia, which had become progressively more difficult in my college years and continued to deteriorate with the arrival of children and other stressors. Lack of sleep eventually becoming a totally debilitation problem– one that led to more stress, more anxiety, and an endless painful cycle in my life. I had appealed to very branch of medicine known to me, yet still remained a mystery to all. With the help of a sleep specialist and several sleep studies over the years I was eventually diagnosed with both sleep apnea and RLS. The apnea was a big shocker to all as I had none of the indicators. I was fitted with CPAP machine though none really fitted, as none were small enough existed for my facial size. In spite of everything including medication, my sleep problems got progressively worse. I was depressed, in constant physical pain, had no energy or stamina for anything and little will to live. Finally I took a leap of faith and pulled out my very last resource – to be used only as an extreme measure because what if this didn’t work? What then? I walked into Marc’s office feeling like “the walking dead” and I’m sure I looked the part. Although I knew very little about acupuncture, the needles didn’t scare me. I didn’t care if they hurt or even if they hurt a lot! – They don’t. I was told I was in the right place and that there was help. How I wanted to believe that. My brain had become a sieve and could not wrap itself around the notion of relief. So I faithfully kept my appointment and after a month or so I noticed improvements. At leas 3 or so hours of sleep was to be had every night now. I was elated but afraid the “luck” would run out and I would be handicapped as before. Marc continued to reassure me, saying “we’ll get you sleeping, you don’t scare me!” This was so much more than I had ever received from any other healthcare professional. I was always told I was mystery and out came the prescription pad yet again. After about two months of acupuncture, I no longer needed the CPAP! What a relief! After three months of several relapses, I turned a very big corner and was finally able to fall asleep at night – much improved over my usual 4 or 5 AM. For a long time my left leg was not moving at all and I did not have the strength I needed to hold my upper body. There was a spinal cord injury meeting at the hospital and that was where I was introduced to acupuncture. Marc began talking about he benefits of acupuncture and how it helped his father. At first I was skeptical, wondering what those little needles could do for me, but on my first visit to the office they explained it more to me. I have been receiving treatment from Marc for four months and have seen wonderful improvements. I am now moving both my legs. My right leg was always stronger than my left but now its of normal strength. I am back in therapy and I am using a walker with help from my therapist. I am able to take steps on my own and walk longer distances than before. Before it would take up to 45 minutes to walk 7-10 feet and now I can walk 90 feet in those 45 minutes. Acupuncture has helped me to gain movement back, to become stronger, and to do things a lot faster that I have been. I wish I would have known about acupuncture right after my accident because I feel that I would be a lot further with my recovery by now. I went to my general practitioner, my gynecologist, and several neurologists. All of the medicines I tried either didn’t work or had intolerable side effects. My son has been receiving treatment from Marc Cutler for almost a year, and I am amazed and thankful for his care. As a parent, we all wish for healthy, happy children. My son was loveable, easy-going baby yet seemed to be somehow unusual at times. He did not reach the motor milestones until the very end of what deemed “normal.” Loud sounds, even everyday ones like blenders and doorbells could send him into hysterical fits.
